To save energy, I tend to setup the Power Option of our PC's rather aggressive. While this works OK most of the times, there are some tasks when the System should run without going to sleep but does not need user input (backup, downloading large files, ...).
As I did not want to change the Power Options back and forth every time (and often even forget to switch back on) I used to simply play a video in slow motion. The video player (VLC) prevents the system from entering standby.
Now, just recently, I stumbled over "Insomnia" by David Anson:
While this tool is running the System won't go to sleep. After closing it, the Power Options are again available and kick in after the specified time.
